The School of Arts, English and Languages at Queen's University Belfast is one of the most diverse in the British Isles and Ireland. With over 120 academic and support staff and over 1,300 students, the school offers a stimulating and professionally focused learning environment with strong links with industry. Our vibrant programme of public events includes concerts, drama performances, readings, screenings and talks/conferences and the facilities used by the school are among the best in the UK.
The Music courses at the School are practical degree programmes which also incorporate theoretical engagement in areas including performance, composition, sound design, audio production and audio engineering. These industry-engaged and research-led programmes provide a well-rounded and flexible learning experience, which prepares graduates for the demands of a rapidly evolving workplace. Our cutting-edge facilities include both stereo and surround sound production studios; recording studios; concert venues, including the world-leading Sonic Lab; a television and radio broadcast studio, the Film Studio; Queen's Film Theatre; and the Brian Friel Theatre. Our equipment store boasts a wide range of digital audio and video equipment, including high-end studio microphones, audio recorders, Virtual Reality headsets and 4k HD cameras. Our facilities and equipment have been designed and acquired in consultation with BBC Northern Ireland and other industry professionals.
The successful candidate will provide technical support for the Music programmes at the School. They will be based at the Sonic Arts Research Centre, a dynamic cross-disciplinary hub where practice and research in music, sound design, audio production, performance, audio engineering and broadcast production meet and intersect. The candidate will manage cutting-edge facilities and equipment across multi-site locations and also help support the thriving public events at the School. They will work in a creative and innovative environment and with a team of technical specialists in other areas including broadcast, film and drama.
The successful candidate must have:
Education to at least HND level, and/or professional equivalent in audio postproduction, or a related field
A minimum of four years' experience in providing technical or instructional support within an educational, arts or commercial audio setting
Experience in setting up and maintaining a range of audio, film/video and computer resources
Demonstrable familiarity with audio editing software such as Pro Tools
Expertise in using current professional quality audio recording and mixing facilities
Experience of fault finding and testing audio and computer equipment
Ability to plan and allocate work and responsibilities using discretion to determine priorities and resolve conflicts to meet targets and deadlines
Good supervisory skills
