Job description
Applications are invited for the role of an Instrumentation Technician within the School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering within Queen's University Belfast. This is a full-time and permanent post in which the successful candidate will be based in the Ashby Lab Block building and working as part of a team, delivering technical support to academic/research
staff and PhDs for world leading research and development in subject areas such as bio-engineering, clean energies and composite materials and structures.
The role will involve bespoke instrumentation solutions requiring design, selection, installation, set-up and fault finding of instrumentation, to measure many process variables such as pressure, temperature, strain and flow in experimental testing of materials and research equipment. Additionally, you will work with undergraduate students, providing technical support to teaching classes and final year individual/group projects which include projects such as Formula Student and the design, build, fly of model aircraft. Support of these projects involves working with undergrads to provide technical experience and knowledge that will guide them with appropriate design, component selection and testing procedures. Training on the use of specialist material preparation and testing equipment/techniques will be provided to help develop skill sets in other areas.
You will have 3 years' recent relevant experience in instrumentation and engineering control systems. You will have proven demonstrable experience of testing, calibrating, installing, commissioning and fault finding measuring devices and control instruments such as; strain gauges, pressure sensors, load cells, thermocouples, stepper motors etc. used in control engineering systems/processes.
