Job description
Queen's University Belfast is one of the leading universities in the UK and Ireland, with a distinguished heritage and history. With over 24,000 students, 4,200 staff and an annual turnover of some GBP 300m, Queen's University Belfast plays a unique leadership role in Northern Ireland. As a member of the Russell Group of UK research-intensive universities,
Queen's University Belfast combines excellence in research and education with a student centred ethos.
Queen's University has generous terms and conditions of employment underpinned by excellent benefits. We also provide attractive well-being, family friendly and other lifestyle benefits.
The School of Biological Sciences is part of the Faculty of Medicine, Health and Life Sciences. It is made up of three research disciplines, including Ecosystems Biology & Sustainability, Food Safety & Nutrition, and Microbes & Pathogen Biology. Most staff within the School are also members of the Institute for Global Food Security GRI: the Institute is ranked No 1 in the UK for research intensity in Agriculture, Veterinary and Food Sciences (REF 2014).
The School aims to enhance the way we use technology in research, food security, microbiology, ecosystem biology, sustainability and many other related areas. The School prides itself on providing innovative teaching methods and a high-tech learning environment for our students and has been awarded the prestigious Athena SWAN Gold award in recognition of its work to support women in science.
We have a unique and exciting opportunity in an inter-regional, multi-institutional setting for a Research Assistant to work on a multi-species marine telemetry and population genetics project combining studies on flapper skate and basking shark around Ireland, Northern Ireland and Scotland.
As part of the ambitious EU SeaMonitor project, the Research Assistant within this team will liaise with skate fishermen through the study area and engage them in tagging and genetic sampling programme. Additionally, they will take a lead role in managing a Flapper Skate scientific working group. For basking sharks there will be a strong element of community outreach including the development of online tools in collaboration with the lead partner, The Loughs Agency. Working closely with project partners and other members of the team, the post holder will act in a scientific and policy advisory capacity. The post holder will also be required to provide specialist advice on issues to the Project Board and other partners as appropriate.
This post is full time for 41 months or until 31 December 2022 (whichever is sooner).
