Language Support Officer Graduate Trainee
Job description
This is an excellent opportunity for a graduate from a Language related discipline, who wants to build a career in Higher Education, to acquire invaluable skills and experience at a leading UK University.
You will work as part of a professional team and will learn through on-the-job experiences and training programmes delivered by the Language Centre and
University training programmes, and other specific field-related training opportunities. You will develop a broad understanding of all aspects of the Language and Cultural skills development, supported by the University Language Centre, developing awareness of project management methodologies, best practice in the field, and develop the ability to contribute to the support of the same.
The Language Support Officer Graduate Trainee will join our Information Services Department and the successful candidate will provide support to a broad range of Language Centre activities. This includes the facilitation of bespoke cultural awareness programmes, managing relationships with colleagues across faculty to better understand how the Language Centre can best support students in a broad range of contexts, as well as supporting the promotion of Language and Cultural skills development to staff and students throughout the University.
The Language Centre Team are at the forefront of facilitating the University's Language and Cultural skills development programmes, by delivering and supporting the University's Languages for Non-Specialists programme, as well as Languages for Specific purposes, Cultural Awareness training programmes and Sign Language training opportunities, available to all staff and students. The Language Centre Team also support a range of bespoke courses, available to students studying on specific pathways.
The successful candidate will be a team player, with excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to multi-task while working under pressure to achieve tight deadlines. They will also be required to demonstrate initiative and have a pro-active approach to their work. It is important that the successful candidate can demonstrate exceptional and flexible communicative competence in order to effectively engage with a wide range of stakeholders in varying contexts.
The duration of the post, which is available immediately, is two years (or one for experienced candidates) after which a permanent Language Support Officer post will be guaranteed, providing that the job holder meets the required performance criteria.
You will have 42 days annual leave, as well as generous pension scheme, with 21.1% employer contribution. The successful candidate must have:

A 2:1 honours degree in a Language, or a Language related discipline. This must have been obtained no earlier than summer 2017

Knowledge of standard approaches to Language and Cultural skills development.

Knowledge of language skills progress frameworks (e.g. CEFR).
