Senior Embedded Software Engineer
Job description
At CSIT we focus on securing our digital tomorrow. Our world-leading research into cyber-security is breaking new ground in making devices and networks more resilient to attack, not just for the technology limits of today but for the challenges of the next generation.
As an engineer within CSIT you will immerse yourself in new concepts and help take them out
of the realm of the potential and into the realm of reality. You will use industrial strength engineering practices to help propel CSIT's intellectual property into ground breaking commercially viable products and services.
You should be an engineer who can turn fundamental concepts into reliable, maintainable code that demonstrates the concept in a manner that other people will find easy to understand and extend. You are not afraid to learn new tools and techniques and have stayed current on various technologies. You have a knowledge of the challenges involved in creating products for the market of today and a passion to maintain security against the attacks of tomorrow.
This post is currently available until 31 January 2022. Fixed term contract posts are available for the stated period in the first instance but, in particular circumstances, may be renewed or made permanent, subject to availability of funding.
About CSIT
CSIT is unique within the university in that it combines QUB academic and research staff with industry-experienced engineers. Together we work to develop technology demonstrators that make our work accessible to industry partners and helps to raise the cyber-security bar. As engineers, we use a pragmatic approach to finding the right tool for the job, and are not dogmatic about any particular technology stack. You will find a mix of C, C++, Java, Python, Perl, R, Shell, VHDL and more.
The Engineering team engages in all areas where internal research is ready for technology hardening and, as such, an engineer can find a range of skilled challenges ranging from programming embedded devices to performing anomaly detection on large-scale datasets to architecting application-level controllers and more. We are a team in high demand as we increase our engagements in industry-led innovation projects.
CSIT receives funding from a number of domestic and international research and innovation sources as well as direct engagement with industrial collaborators.
The successful candidate must have:
2:1 Honours Degree, or equivalent, in Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Computer Science or related discipline.
Must have 5+ years' experience as a software developer programming in high level programming languages (e.g. C/C++, Java, Python, VHDL)
Must have familiarity of strong code development techniques such as Build Systems (e.g. MVN, Gradle, Make, Ant), Configuration Management (e.g. Git, Perforce, SVN) and Continuous Integration (e.g. Jenkins, Hudson, Jira)
Should have experience with testing, including unit testing, mocks, and test driven development Virtualization (e.g. VMWare, Vagrant, VirtualBox, Hyper-V)
We offer competitive salaries with an annual review and a cost of living increase. At Queen's we hold work life balance in the highest regard, offering 37 days annual leave and family friendly initiatives. Our generous pension of USS 21.1% employer contribution, and we offer a multitude of development options tailored to help you succeed within your role with us and to support you with your career progression. As an employee you will be able to access discounted award winning sports facilities, Queen's Film Theatre and local food and beverage outlets among many others. We are immensely proud of what our University will offer you.
