The School of Mathematics & Physics at Queen’s University Belfast, is currently seeking to appoint an exceptional candidate to the post of postdoctoral researcher to work on the generation of atomic data necessary for the modelling of the spectra of neutron star mergers and other exploding transients. The R-matrix codes will primarily be used in the calculations and code development of these computer packages will be central to the position. In addition, the successful candidate will be involved in the astrophysical modelling, using numerical radiative transfer simulations, for these studies of supernovae. The role will thus involve data generation and code development work in collaboration with Professor Connor Ballance and Professor Catherine Ramsbottom, and also simulations using the radiative transfer codes of Dr. Stuart Sim. The role will involve collaboration (both internal and external to QUB) with three other institutes in Copenhagen (observational astronomy), UCD (laser plasma absorption spectroscopy) and GSI Darmstadt (r-process nucleosynthesis). This position is fully funded by an ERC grant for a period of up to 3 years (or the end date of the grant, whichever is sooner). Applicants should expect that this position will involve periods of travel and/or extended visits to our project partners.
The successful candidate must have, and your application should clearly demonstrate you have:
You are also required to submit your full CV, including publication list, cover letter and two-page research statement evidencing how your experience meets the criteria. The above must be collated into one file for uploading.
Please note the above are not an exhaustive list. For further information about the role including the essential and desirable criteria, please click on the Candidate Information link below.
This is a fixed term contract for 3 years, or until 31 August 2026, whichever is sooner. Fixed term contract posts are available for the stated period in the first instance but in particular circumstances may be renewed or made permanent subject to availability of funding.
