Research Assistant
Job description
The Centre for Public Health (CPH) staff aim to identify the epidemiological and genetic risk factors that are important for the health of the individual and of the population, and to develop screening and interventions to reduce the burden of chronic disease in the future.
To achieve this, CPH is developing high quality research programmes involving close
collaboration between clinical experts and scientists with skills in biochemistry, epidemiology, genetics and statistics. There is a strong emphasis on maintaining international research collaborations, facilitated through formal links with a number of other institutions. In addition, the Centre actively participates in research networks throughout the UK and Europe.
The Research Assistant post will entail assisting in the planning and delivery of research as part of a MRC funded study designed to examine, through Game Theory experiments, the mechanisms of action of two smoking prevention programmes in schools in Belfast, Northern Ireland and Bogota, Colombia.
The post will entail working with others in the Centre for Public Health, the Centre for Evidence and Social Innovation and the Queen's Management School. In particular, we are interested in better understanding how social networks and norms influence smoking behaviour and behaviour change.
As well as helping to conduct the field experiments in Northern Ireland where the position is based, it will also involve conducting post-intervention focus groups and interviews with pupils and teachers in schools receiving each programme and with trainers delivering the programme(s), and involve travel to Bogota with other members of the research team.
