The School of Medicine, Dentistry and Biomedical Sciences is currently seeking to appoint an exceptional candidate to the post of Senior Lecturer in Bacterial Pathogenesis. The successful candidate will strengthen the academic base within the Wellcome-Wolfson Institute for Experimental Medicine, teach at undergraduate and postgraduate level, and contribute to School and Institute administration / outreach activity. This person will employ multidisciplinary and innovative approaches to advance our understanding as to how bacteria contribute to pathogenesis, chronicity, and recurrence of human disease, including antibiotic resistance.
The post holder must: be degree qualified and have a relevant PhD; have significant relevant research experience with a record of high quality outputs and funding; have substantial relevant teaching experience at University level and have demonstrable experience of academic leadership.
We encourage applicants with a background in one or more of the following areas: cellular microbiology, antimicrobial resistance, host-pathogen interaction including the immune system, and microbiome in health and disease. However, outstanding candidates in other areas will be considered, and should be able to liaise and develop projects with clinical colleagues, and be keen to do discovery science by bridging clinical work and fundamental biology (biomarkers, immune responses, tissue homeostasis among other areas).
The Wellcome-Wolfson Institute for Experimental Medicine provides an outstanding interdisciplinary and collegial environment to answer major questions of human health by understanding the molecular mechanisms of disease. The Institute is an internationally recognised hub for excellence in research on respiratory medicine and critical care, ophthalmology, basic immunology, and host-pathogen (viral and bacterial) interactions. This rich scientific environment provides unique opportunities for fast-track translation of basic discoveries into human health. The Institute has access to core facilities for discovery science, including a BSL-3 lab, genomics, mass cytometry, imaging, and platforms to support clinical studies. There are excellent opportunities for collaboration with colleagues in the Centre for Public Health on communicable diseases and antimicrobial resistance, the School of Pharmacy on formulations of drug delivery, and the School of Biological Sciences on environmental and food microbiology.
