Research Software Engineer
Job description
The candidate will work as part of a project team involving Queen's University Belfast and Ulster University and be responsible for on-boarding researchers from multiple disciplines onto the Tier 2 facilities. You will work with researchers to gain a clear understanding of their research challenges, help them design HPC software deploying existing code
bases and simulations onto HPC.
This is an excellent opportunity to work with both software and hardware. This is a high profile role across the University and you will be building relationships with various researchers across different areas. You will work closely with QUB, Ulster and National UK researchers so you can understand their requirements and work out their computing and capacity planning. As HPC is interdisciplinary in nature, you will work across many different areas such as Chemistry, Pharmacy, Global Food Security, Precision Medicine, Neuroscience and Hydrogen safety.
This is an exciting opportunity for someone who would like to contribute to the design, development, management and support of research software applications. You will be working with a range of cutting-edge technology, having the opportunity to experience the systems side and the software side of computing. On the systems side you will administer clusters of computes nodes, high performance networking and large storage systems. On the software side, you will expand your software skills by using parallel programming.
This role will be part of the first Northern Ireland Tier 2 Facility and will have a significant impact for science, by expanding the use of HPC to new pools of talent and new areas of investigation for Northern Ireland. This is a full time, permanetn position, working within a friendly and collegial team.
Queen's University Belfast is one of the leading universities in the UK and Ireland with over 24,000 students, 4,350 staff and an annual turnover of some GBP 300m. We offer generous terms and conditions of employment underpinned by excellent benefits including attractive well-being, family friendly and other lifestyle benefits.
You will have 42 days annual leave, as well as generous pension scheme, with 21.1% employer contribution. Our staff are our greatest resource and we are dedicated to providing a wide range of training and development opportunities, with free courses available to all staff. We have excellent staff discounts to include Queen's Film Theatre, language courses and gym memberships at Queen's Sport
The successful candidate must have:
Degree (2.1 or higher) in Science, Engineering or Computing, or a closely related discipline, or a higher degree in the same or closely related subjects
Experience in one or more of the following:-
Excellent programming and software engineering skills with knowledge and proven experience of using industry standard software.
Experience of compiling and supporting a range of complex and modern software on Linux.
Experience of optimising the performance of a software system.
Experience of working within a research team and/or software development team.
Willingness to travel locally and internationally as required by the post.
