The School of Mathematics & Physics at Queen’s University Belfast, is currently seeking to appoint Research Fellows to support the delivery of the UKRI Strength in Places Smart Nano NI programme by engaging in impactful applied and translational research.
We are seeking Research Fellows in optical/photonic instrument design. In this role you will take a lead in the design and test of optical prototypes and instruments using near and far field components through to creating photonic integrated circuits to support research in data storage through biomedical imaging/biosensing to telecommunications.
The posts are in support of the UKRI Smart Nano NI programme which sees an investment of £12M in capital, recurrent, research/technical staff and PhD studentships in the area over the next five years. Allied to our existing facilities and programmes, such as the EPSRC-SFI Centre for Doctoral Training in Photonic Integration & Advanced Data Storage (www.cdt-piads.ac.uk) and the Belfast City Regional City Deal Advanced Manufacturing Innovation Centre (www.brcd-innovation.co.uk/projects/amic) which will incorporate 600m2 photonics/electronics state-of-the-art cleanroom facility in 2024.
You will be a researcher with a growing international reputation with research interests in plasmonic metrology that align to the photonics and optics research strengths within the Smart Nano NI Programme and partners. These range from data storage through biomedical imaging/biosensing to telecommunications. In addition, the School of Mathematics and Physics is consolidating its cognate research into a new Centre for Quantum Materials and Technologies that brings together world leading practitioners in functional and photonic materials, atomistic modelling and simulation and quantum technology and theory to provide a vibrant collaborative environment.
